I Tried Dating A Southern Gentleman
Growing up I always wanted to call a Southern guy mine. Going to church is just one of the things Southern families raise their children to do. To have a relationship with Christ seems to define a person on a more effective level. It is an important factor in most relationships he will have. If you are from the South, sweet tea is what you drink. It is a part of our culture and it is damn delicious too.
Probably only a Northerner. Of course, everyone is going to have a past, but just as depicted in movies, Southerners tend to have more baggage than others. But there is nothing wrong with that, just prepare yourself for the worst and pray for the best. Everything else will come with time. I have never met a man that has showed me more respect than the man that I am dating. From pulling out my chair, to opening and closing doors, to saying please and thank you, it does not get any better than that.
I thank his parents for this. Any girl would kill for this. I am from the south, so I absolutely do not have a problem with country music, but when your Southern man plays the same song over and over again it can kind of get annoying. It will not happen every time. I promise. And us southern women cannot disagree this for sure is a turn on. We like jacked up trucks and going mudding in them. It's just what we like. Don't ask me to explain it. Dating a man who, like myself, is originally from Georgia makes our love for football even greater.
No matter what team, football is a huge part of our lives, and that will never change. Every Southern boy loves their momma and I know mine does. From her Dolly Parton looks to her amazing cooking, all the way down to shouting at the television screen when football is on. There is nothing more he could ask for than a loving momma that has shown him how to live life to the fullest.
They have seriously known each other for the longest time. They have so many stories they will probably tell anyone at any point in time. You better be damn sure that he will be his best man the day he marries the girl of his dreams. No matter what anyone says, family is important and that is the main focus of most men.
They want to have relationships like their parents have, ones that will last forever and make memories they would be able to share with their future children. Yes, there are times that he may not act his age, but deep down he is looking for someone to settle down with and bring home to mom and dad. One that they would actually approve of. So here starts the journey. When he really cares for you, you will see that he will show it in some type of way.
Now every time that song comes on I just look at him and think how much I have fallen in love with him and where our relationship will get to in the future. Now I know I made a promise to never argue with his bad habits, but sometimes dipping is just gross. But you are never going to get a southern man to change the fact that he dips. Thank you for teaching me how to love you and your bad habits. Forever and always, your girlfriend.
About nine months ago, you left me in front of my dorm, tears in both of our eyes, all by myself. As my first year away from you comes to a close, I'm getting ready to return to the nest. And I can guess you're either feeling really excited to have your baby back, or you are wishing the semester would last a little longer. But whether you're ready or not, I'm coming home. It's been quieter around the house. You haven't had to drive to games, activities, appointments, and events for me.
One less person to clean for, one less person to cook for, and one less person to feel responsible for. It's OK to admit that you've enjoyed it. I loved my first year away from home. I tasted freedom like I never have before, and I would like to think I was safe and smart about it. I figured out how to take care of myself in every way, shape, and form -- I manage my own time, I feed myself, and I get myself from point A to point B.
In just a few short months, I've learned so much about myself and the world outside of our little town. It has been an amazing experience. I'm kind of an adult now, and as I adjust to life back home, I'm asking you to be patient with me. I have spent so much time getting used to a new lifestyle where I can make up my own rules and decide when I want to follow them, it may take me a while to remember how things used to be when I was here all the time.
Please remember that I just busted my butt academically in the two hardest semesters of my life and I'm exhausted. I don't want to think about classes or my grades or anything related to my major — I just want to enjoy my summer. Don't get angry with me if I forget to put my dish in the dishwasher or don't do my laundry for two weeks — when I was living on my own, I could do whatever I wanted. I know I have to live by your rules when I'm home, but give me some time to adjust.
I promise I'm not a slob when I'm at school — I'm just a college student. I've been away from home for so long and there is so much I missed when I was gone. So please, let me pick that local restaurant I love for dinner and allow me to hang out with friends every night if I want to. I've missed the things I left behind and I'm only home for four short months, so I have to enjoy it while I'm here.
I promise to spend time with you before I go back to school. But mostly, I want to say thank you. Thank you for supporting me and loving me through all the tough times this year brought. All the phone calls, worried texts about my taxes, FaceTime sessions with the dog, and surprise weekend visits helped me survive my first year away from home. No matter where I go and how long I'm gone, I'll always be your baby and I will always appreciate everything you've done for me.
No more exams, presentations, meetings, or lectures. For the first time in a long time, I'm all yours. And even though I'm coming home now, soon I will be leaving again — so let me enjoy my time home with you. We are students, thinkers, influencers, and communities sharing our ideas with the world. At some point in your life, you've gone through a break-up in one form or another. Usually, you want closure. You assume that the best way to get closure is by talking to the other person. You want to know why he didn't think you were worth it, whether he actually had feelings or was just using you to pass the time. You want to know if there's any way that it can still work out.. Asking those questions will not give you peace of mind.
When you do ask those questions there's a few things that could happen: At this point, nothing he tells you will give you peace of mind, and nothing that you say will change his mind. Most importantly, when you have all those questions you want to ask him for closure, you're giving him power over you-- again. Not only did he have the power to hurt you, but if you ask those questions then he also has the power to give peace to your mind.
He doesn't deserve that power, you deserve that power. What's really hurting you is the fact that it ended. Yes, not knowing exactly what his reasons were or not knowing if he's telling the truth about why he ended things sucks, but it doesn't hurt. The fact that it ended is something that you need to heal from, and you won't heal by seeking closure.
By seeking closure you're giving him more pieces of you than you already have, and you're better of keeping whatever's left of you intact. It's easier to heal your heart by saying, "That sucked, I deserve better," than to spend time asking questions that won't change anything and won't make you feel better. Most of the time when someone leaves, you blame yourself. You think you're not attractive enough, not skinny enough, not smart enough, just generally not enough.
This mindset is easy to fall into and honestly, there's no way to not think it. What you can work on, is thinking that way for less time. Let the thought come, and let it go. Remember you are good enough and if someone doesn't see that then that's on him, not you. It sucks that you allowed someone into the deeper parts of your life and now you're left wondering why he acted as if he cared so much when he just ended up leaving.
It sucks that you weren't what he wanted. It sucks walking around with all of these little pieces of other people that are just heavyweight that you can't seem to get rid of. Stop trying to hold on to what could've been.
I wouldn't say they were all southern gentlemen, but dating in the South is uniquely different from dating northern men. Other than deciding to. I will admit to being partially biased on this topic, as my roots are about as deep- fried and Southern-grown as they can be. I grew up in both.
The piece spawned plenty of responses — my favorite being an equally insightful piece from fellow Thought Catalog contributor Karyn Spencer — and in the discussions that followed men, in general, have taken a beating. Successful men recognize their scarcity and exploit it, playing the field with the sort of joie de vivre you might expect from a UNC fraternity brother , leaving their female counterparts in the unenviable position of having to tolerate their behavior or else significantly lower their expectations. They are finding it easier than ever to date upward, to latch onto lonely sugarmamas, to fall into a relationship despite themselves.
Let's be real: I know the horrors all too well.

I will admit to being partially biased on this topic, as my roots are about as deep-fried and Southern-grown as they can be. I have spent a significant amount of time dating, meeting, working and socializing with men from all over the country, and can now say the results are officially in: As a self-proclaimed feminist, some people are surprised I value the traditional traits of a Southern man. While I do think there are some stereotypes about the traditional male-female gender roles still true in the South, my experience with true Southern men has been nothing but empowering and encouraging. These days, in a respectable and valiant attempt to place men and women on the same playing field, chivalry seems to be viewed as demeaning or sexist. With this mindset, we are at risk of losing basic respect for one another and the idea that women are special and to be treated as such is quickly headed for the door. That being said, the fact that Southern gentlemen are still being raised right and taught how to treat women is more refreshing than a big glass of iced tea on a hot summer day. There are also exceptions outside of the South, and men who posses these great qualities who were raised north of the Mason Dixon line. James and I met when I was ready to give up on online dating and sign off on this stupid app called tinder. James looked like a typical southern guy: He was born and raised in Texas and he ran a family owned business. I figured James being new to the city can only be a good thing: After our quick chat on tinder he asked if I was free that night, because if I was he would move his business dinner to some other night and meet me instead. His confident style via texts felt like a breath of fresh air and I was kind enough to agree to meet him at a bar that was 2 blocks from my apartment.
