Study abroad is a type of travel that brings a sense of adventure out of even the most travel-timid. For many of us, study abroad is our first step out of our comfort zones and into the world of travel. Sounds just a tad exciting, right? These are your hunka hunka burning love questions, answered. Nothing could be more exciting than a little international love. What could be bad about a fun fling with a foreign campus cutie studying at your American college? Is it wise to get romantically involved with an exchange student while knowing that person will only be around for a limited time before returning home?

We talked to some experienced collegiettes and came up with seven things to consider before dating a temporary visitor to the States. Dating someone from a different country can be a nice departure from the norm. He kept things exciting, just because I never knew what to expect from him. Date night may never be predictable again! However, culture clashing can come with challenges as well. Being willing to compromise is key for both participants in an international relationship. Though you may go into a relationship not expecting much more than a fling, be open to the possibility that your international relationship may surpass its expiration date.

Dating rituals differ amongst cultures, and unless you and your international beau explicitly communicate your expectations , some things can become lost in translation. Nothing quite compares to exploring a new place with someone you have feelings for. Things taste better. Sights are prettier. Moments are more meaningful. Abroad romances are just different from other types of relationships.

But believe it or not, I told myself the same thing and I was terribly wrong.
